Canadian forward Jeff Skinner signs a 6-year extension with Carolina Hurricanes- NHL Report
Jeff Skinner, a Canadian forward who had become youngest player ever to play in the NHL All-Star game two years back, has re-signed with Carolina Hurricanes by having an extension of six years.
Skinner was picked 7th overall in the 2010 NHL Draft by Hurricanes and signed a three-year entry-level contract with the same team on 21st September 2010. He still a year left on his previous contract but he already has signed a deal
which would keep him at the place until 2019.
The six-year deal was signed for $34.35 million and a cap hit of $5.725 million. According to the contract, 20-year-old right-winger would be given a salary of $4.35 million first season and $6 million every year onwards.
The Toronto, Ontario resident was very happy on being signed and was grateful to the Hurricanes’ organisation for showing trust on him. He also wants to prove them right by showing the performance that they are expecting from him as he said,
"It's nice to be a part of the organization for even longer. Obviously, I'm very grateful for them to select me in the draft (No. 7 in 2010) and then today showing me the confidence to have me around long-term. It's definitely a nice message and hopefully
I can prove them right."
Raleigh, North Carolina based side has not finished in top 8 and have not qualified for Stanley Cup playoffs in last three seasons and in the two seasons that Skinner has played in, something that he wants to change.
2010-2011 season, which was 5-foot-11, 200 pounder, Skinner’s first season in the NHL and he was the youngest player in the league, Hurricanes missed the Playoffs spot by just one place as they finished 9th in the Western Conference and 3rd
in the Southeast conference with 91 points, just two less than New York Rangers, who had finished eighth in the regular season.
Even though Skinner’s performance was good in both seasons as he scored 107 points in 146 games he played over the two years but 2011-2012 season was even worse for Hurricanes as they finished 12th in the Conference and 5th in the Southeast
division.
Skinner’s goal is to make his team qualify for post season as he said,
"That's the goal going into any season, is to make it to the postseason, and once you get there, anything can happen”.
