Canadian marrying an american. how long does it take to get a US work permit?

my fiance is american and i plan on moving there. I know some people and have been told to go into the states saying I am visiting, and then just get married. then she files for work permit and greencard. Is this something that works? how long does it take to get the work permit?

Yea.. that is true but that's not the right way to go about it. I did that. I came to the US a visitor, I got married not knowing anything about immigration procedures and I stayed put in the US to adjust my status. We filed I-130, I-485, I-765, I-864 and I-131. I applied in March 2008, got my work authorization card in May and received my green card in June.

No!  Asked and answered already!  If you enter on anything other than a fiance visa, you must leave the US and remain in Canada while a spousal visa is applied for and processed.  You are triggering an automatic marriage fraud investigation with what you are trying to do!  Knock it off.

And you will not get authorization to work in the US for a couple of years if you marry.  Likewise, if you come on a work permit and marry, the work permit is automatically cancelled, and you have to go home.
