Canadian minimum driving age?

I've heard that in Canada the driving age is 16, I am British and 15, next summer we are going to Canada for a holiday.

Could I learn driving then, when I'll be 16, and if I pass would I be eligible for a International Driving License or do I have to be Canadian to do this or are there any British laws prohibiting this?

  1. International Driving License means just that International(but that is another test after you get past your driving test.     It is to know other signs and markings.

But in Canada, that does not really matter.  You have to know how to repair your skidoo and kill seal and eat muck-tuk, besides falling trees with a 38"McCulloch chainsaw.  Yar.

  2. Sixteen.  But most provinces have graduated licensing systems so you can't get your full licence will all the demerit points for two years.  I am not sure what the rules are about international drivers licences but you would be hard pressed to find anyone willing to rent a car to anyone under 25.  The insurance company rented me a car when I was 22 and that was probably the only way a person that age could get one.

  3. In Canada, at least in BC, you can get your licence at 16.

However, car rental companies won't let you drive their vehicles when you're that young and inexperienced - you'd have to check but I think its at least 21, or could even be 25.

Have a great time in Canada!

  4. I believe across the country it's 16, but in Ontario you are not allowed to drive on 400 series highways--takes expereince to negotiate those puppies.

  5. In order to qualify for a Canadian "learners  permit " you have to be a legal resident in Canada, not a temporary visitor.

    Sorry .
