Canadian national women’s team eliminated from Pan American Cup – Volleyball news
The Pan American Cup that is currently taking place in the city of Juarez, Mexico has reached a dead end for the Canadian women’s national volleyball team as they suffered a elimination loss to Cuba on Monday. Despite the fact that the Canadian team has now been officially kicked-out from the tournament, they will not be going home until the team plays one final scheduled match on Tuesday against Chile.
The loss the Canadian team suffered at the hands of the Cubans was hard to swallow because it was a clean sweep. The first set of the match did not go well for the Canadians as the Cubans won it with a convincing margin. It was in the second set that the Canadians showed some sign of life but it was still not enough to generate a win. The Canadians were able to rally together and step up their game in the third set but the effort came in too late and was not enough to stop the Cubans from match victory by 25-13, 25-18 and 25-22.
Tammy Mohan, who is the captain on the Canadian side, made the following comments after her team had been eliminated: “We always learn playing against a team like Cuba, so we were glad to have them in our pool. We go (Tuesday) against Chile and I hope we can find our rhythm because today we had many ups and downs.”
On the Canadian side, Sarah Pavan was able to make the highest points on her team and lived up to her reputation of being the top scorer in the tournament so far. Pavan kept the score board ticking by posting 13 points and was helped by team-mates Lucille Charuk as well as Elizabeth Cordonier, who scored six and five points respectively.
On the Cubans side, Kenia Carcaces was the star player as she was able to keep the pressure on the Canadians by putting up 17 points on her side of the score board.
Pool A included Canada, Cuba, Dominican Republic and Mexico. The Cubans are on top of the pool with an undefeated record and a winning streak of four. The Dominican Republic has been able to tally three wins at the cost of no losses. Mexico on the other hand has suffered three loses and registered just one win so far.
The team that secures the first position in the pool play will get a straight ticket to the semi-finals whereas those that have the second and the third positions will contest each other in the quarter-finals of the tournament.
