Canadian pair Nusbaum/O’Gorman in battle for third in World Junior Beach Volleyball championships
The eighth seeded Canadian team of Aaron Nusbaum and Grant O’Gorman are all set to appear in the World Junior Beach Volleyball Championships bronze medal match today, June 26. The international championship is taking place in Umag, Croatia.
The Canadian squad had previously played the in the semi-final of the World Junior Beach Volleyball Championships saw the semi-final match on Saturday. Canada took on Norway but was unable to overcome their rivals and was sent packing. This sealed a spot
in the Finals for the Norwegians as Nusbaum/O’Gorman were left to contend for third place in the overall competition.
In order to come this far, the Canadian team of Nusbaum and Gorman were able to defeat Ukraine in the opening match. The Canadian tandem did well and knocked out the Ukrainian team by 21-12 and 21-18. After that, Canada also stood victorious against Spain
as well as Slovenia.
The semi-final saw Aaron Nusbaum, who belongs to Aurora, Ontario and Grant O’Gorman of Toronto take on Andreas Takvam and Runar Sannarnes of Norway. The first set of the match was easily bagged by the Canadians but Norway tied the match by winning the second
set of the game. The third and final set saw tough competition between the two teams but Norway was able to prevail and get a chance at gold.
By the time that Norway was done, the final set scores stood at: 15-21, 21-15 and 15-10.
Nusbaum/O’Gorman was not the only Canadian team to take part in the championship. The other team consisted of Danny Demyanenko and Andrew Kocur. This 23rd seeded pair could not go further than the quarter-final round before their progress was
stopped. The highlight of their campaign was their spectacular win over the Italians. By the time that they were done, the Italians were going home cradling a loss at 16-21 and 13-21.
Interestingly, both the Canadian teams were defeated by the same Norwegian pair. Demyanenko and Kocur lost out to the Norwegians in the quarter-finals at 14-21 and 18-21.
