Canadian swimmers stuns at the Canadian Olympic & Paralympic Trials – Part 3
After the stupendous efforts of their local swimmers on opening day of the Canadian Olympic and Paralympic Trials in Montreal, the Canadian fans went wild and their craving for the passionate efforts of their national stars reached new heights.
The second day of the championship included finals of 200m butterfly, 100m backstroke, 400m Individual Medley (IM), 50m backstroke and 4*200m freestyle in Men and Women’s corner.
The first event of second day was Men’s 200m butterfly, where David Sharpe demonstrated his smothering efforts and proved his mettle for gold medal. Sharpe remained in a slight lead over his subsequent rival and tapped the wall with an effort of 1 minute
and 58.81 seconds for gold medal.
His effort remained nearly seven seconds slower from the world record of 1 minute and 51.51 seconds, made by Michael Phelps of USA in 2009. His time was also 1.80 seconds sluggish from the national mark of 1 minute and 57.01 seconds, set by Stefan Hirniak
at the 2012 Delhi Commonwealth Games.
The second position of the discipline was obtained by Zack Chetrat, who reached the podium for silver medal by hitting the wall with an effort of 1 minute and 58.83 seconds. The third spot of the discipline was obtained by Alec Page, who failed to miss his
berth in the butterfly event but snared bronze medal with the timing of 1 minute and 59.99 seconds.
Next was the Women’s 100m backstroke, where Julia Wilkinson stunned the audience with her stupendous swim. Wilkinson went full rampant in the double lap event as she posted 59.85 seconds for gold medal.
Her effort remained marginally slower from the national record of 59.68 seconds, made by Sinead Russell at the 2011 World Championships. She was also slower from the world record of 58.12 seconds, made by Gemma Spofforth of Great Britain in 2009.
The second position of the discipline was secured by defending champion, Russell, who failed to substantiate on the wall for the title and posted 1 minute and 00.45 seconds.
Hilary Caldwell was the bronze medallist of 100m discipline as she concluded her race in a time of 1 minute 00.77 seconds for bronze medal.
The third event of the session was Women’s 100m backstroke Para S6-14, where S Mortimer S10SB9SM10 occupied gold medal of the discipline with the timing of 1 minute and 08.19 seconds.
She was followed by Aurelie Rivard S10SB9SM10, who completed her swim in second best place by touching the wall with the timing of 1 minute and 12.60 seconds. J Leblanc-Normand 10910 proved her dominance for the third fastest spot of the event as she clocked
an effort of 1 minute and 16.03 seconds.
She was followed by Kirstie Kasko S14SB14SM14, who ended fourth in the discipline by completing her swim in a time of 1 minute and 18.53 seconds. Fifth spot the discipline was occupied by Camille Berube S8SB7SM8, who tapped the wall with the timing of 1
minute and 26.23 seconds.
Next was the Women’s 50m backstroke Para S1-5, where M Olivier S2SB2SM2 was the only participant of the discipline and posted a time of 2 minutes and 10.09 seconds.
Furthermore, the top two finishers of each event will confirm their spots in the Canadian team to London Games.
