Question:

Canadian wondering about dual citizenship.?

Hello. I am a Canadian citizen.

I have interest in attaining dual citizenship: keeping my Canadian citizenship and attaining one from USA. I've been thinking about this for awhile but I'm busy and know the process is lengthy. Obviously it is something I will have to give a lot more serious thought to.

I was looking on a few sites and under NAFTA professionals, my career is listed. I'm assuming having one of the listed careers makes it a bit easier to get a visa in the United States...??? Does it then make it easier to get dual citizenship?

Also, I'm not sure if this matters but my great grandparents on both sides were American citizens before they moved to Canada (but only after they moved from Ireland and Sweden). So they were Swedish then Americans then Canadians. And same with the Irish side. So do you think there is a slight chance this will help me if I decide I want to become a dual citizen or are Great Grandparents too far back to matter?

  1. The way nafta works is you  must get a job with a nafta business not on your own. The US in most cases, unlike Canada, has no independent immigration based on skills only. Unless you are a teacher, nurse dr or engineer or rich business person.

It takes five years after becoming a permanent resident in the US to apply for US citizenship.

Unless your parents came from the US you are not a citizen in any way shape or form.

go to the us immg site at www.uscis.gov and for more travel info go www.travel.state.gov see canada

i migrated north so i read up on both ways.

  2. Establish a domicile in the US and apply as a US citizen but request if it can exist with a dual Canadian citizenship.
