  1. Maggots or worms

Float fishing on canals is very popular here in Ireland

I prefer to use a Feeder rig myself I have had much better results Use a dark mix in your groundbait (this always works for me anyway but different waters different methods)

    anyway good luck

  2. Most canals are controlled by clubs so you will need a day ticket or a membership card. The best bet is to get down to your local tackle shop and tell them where you want to fish, they will have all the info that you need. As most canals are busy during the day with boats and people using the tow path I would get there at first light or the last few hours ,if possible fish overnight that is when any big fish ie carp, chub will be feeding as there is less disturbance. Also if you can prebait the swim a few days beforehand that way the fish will get used to the bait you are using. I go to my local pet shop and buy a 20kg bag of pigeon feed , it only cost a tenner and will last a season, just soak some for 24hrs and you have a great loose feed that you can fish maize or tiger nuts over.As for rigs ask your tackle shop thats what their there for. bet of luck and tight lines.

  3. I like to fish jigs. They catch all kinds of fish in fresh and saltwater and they work for me when I fish canals. Use a jig that is heavy enough to get to the bottom so you can work it up and down. You can make your offering even more appealing by tipping the jig with a worm, minnow or leach. This is a combination that always puts fish in the boat for my friends and myself. Best of luck and tight lines!!!

  4. hi mate i love canal fishing myself an i always use maggots..castors..bread or luncheon meat...size 14 hook.for the small fish and size 10.for the bigger fish...also some wire traces for pike..hope this helps....goodluck.....

  5. i float fish and use sweetcorn and worm cocktail it is good for tench, carp and bream, or use them as separate baits they still work.

    good luck

  6. All you need is a regular fishing license....

I would fish off the bottom..heavy weight..fresh bait....

    For trolling use FENDERS...

  7. Which canal?

I have fished the Erie Canal in Upstate NY. Rig an egg sinker and hook with a three way swivel. Use live bait and try to get as close to the middle as possible. The current is swiftest in the middle and the bigger fish will be looking for food there. Bring a chair and drink. Evening hours seemed to be the best.

  8. In the UK, you don't need anymore licenses, except permission to fish that particular part of the canal, ask round and see if a day ticket costs anything often they aren't much or nothing at all. Try fishing with a float or bobber, bread works well as bait for carp. Also give Berkley baits a go.
