I have a male canary he used to sing all the time but now he doesn't at all. He stopped singing after we put mineral oil on his beak and feet cause it looked like he might have had mites. My canary hasn't sang since we did that and it was months ago. I thought maybe that he was molting but its august he couldn't possibly still be molting in august could he?

  1. WHY DO PEOPLE TRY TO PLAY DOCTOR?

You say you put mineral oil on his beak?  For mites? why would you suspect mites in the first place?  I know people who did that and what they thought were mites, turned out to be just food - luckily they got the bird to a vet, who was able to help them get rid of the infection that was caused by their ignorance. I'm sure your intentions were good but don't believe everything you read AND if you're determined to go ahead and treat the bird yourself -  DON'T - find an avian vet AND join a local bird club.  There is more then enough information out there - some of it is good + some of it IS NOT - there are many reasons a canary stops singing - could be environment - could be a health issue - take your bird to the vet -  a healthy bird will always sing - AND not just to find a mate - best wishes + I hope your little bird lives to sing many more songs for you :)

  2. canaries sing when they are happy or to attract a mate, get him a female canary companion or perhaps you have changed his diet some way?

Just because canaries dont sing does not mean they are sick. At times my canaries dont sing for weeks but then out of the blue they start singing

  3. just to be safe take him to a vet.   Putting mineral oil on him a month ago shouldn't keep him from singing now.  If he was always a big time singer... maybe he's not feeling well.

Maybe he does have mites and the mineral oil didn't help get rid of them. Birds (if they are sick) don't stay sick long-  they die.

Take him to an avian vet, just to be sure.
