Canberra Lakers trounce Victorian Vikings by 5-3 in Australian Hockey League
Canberra Lakers team emerged victorious over Victorian Vikings by 5-3 in the Australian Hockey League (AHL) played in Canberra on June 12, 2011.
From the very start, it seemed that the Canberra squad landed on the field with a winning-mind in order to boost their position in the next round.
Both the teams opened the game quite sensibly in the very early minutes. However, it was Victorian Vikings which marked their first goal in the 5th minute of the game. James Webster found himself alone before the cage and he
did not miss the chance by sending a direct hit into the Lakers’ goal-post.
In the 13th minute of the game, Lakers' Glenn Turner managed to take the ball in front of the crossbar and unleashed a powerful shot, but it was blocked by George Bazeley, the custodian of the Victorian Vikings. However, Turner
did it again in the 15th minute through a field effort and had it all even at 1-1.
In a bid to improve their control over the ball, the players from Lakers started more offensive style of play. In the fast and furious efforts, they managed a couple of goals in a short span of time. Aaron Kershaw, after some brilliant, passing got
the ball and tapped it comfortably into the goal to put his side ahead onto the score-board. In an unexpected move, the Lakers further expanded their lead up to two goals in the 23rd minute, when Matt McLaughlin managed to take the
ball into the defensive circle of Vikings and sent a low-flying shot at the back of the net.
In a counter-offence strike, the Victorian players carried out back-to-back attacks and in the 25th minute of the game. James Webster once again made a lengthy run towards the downfield and scored the second goal of the day
to reduce the lead down to a single goal. Both squads found some more scoring chances, but these efforts were ruled out by defenders and the first half concluded with Lakers holding a solitary goal edge, 3-2.
The speed of the game slowed down in the second half, as both teams were playing cautious game. Both the sides were in struggle to get the ball under their control. Jack Wallace of Lakers scored another goal to regain a two-goal lead. Vikings’ Paul
MacKinnon notched a goal in the 56th minute of the game to remain in the game. With two minutes into the game, the Victorian Vikings found another chance to level the score but failed to do so. Lakers’ Daniel Hotchkis added another
goal in the second last minute and sealed the victory at 5-3.
