Canberra Lakers trounces South Australia Hotshots by 6-2 in Australian Hockey League
Wouter Hermkens scored two goals and had an assist, as Canberra Lakers marked a commanding 6-2 triumph over South Australia Hotshots in Round V of the Australian Hockey League (AHL) that took place at the Perth Hockey Stadium, Australia, on June 26.
SA Hotshots and Canberra Lakers, the two splendid squads, began the game in quite a professional way and showed splendid passing in the early minutes. However, the SA Hotshots were looking slow as compared to Lakers in the first round.
Though, both the teams made plenty of penetrations into the defensive circles of either side, but failed to convert them into successful goals.
SA Hotshots drew the first blood in the 18th minute of the game, when Jacob Webber converted a penalty-stroke into a successful goal thorough a brilliant execution and put his side ahead on the scoreboard. The Hotshots’ goal increased the pressure
on Canberra Lakers who were playing a very cautious game.
With to and fro strikes, they managed to establish their dominance and created an opportunity in the 30th minute of the game. Daniel Hotchkis converted a short-corner in quite an outstanding way and had it all even at 1-1. In a matter of two minutes,
the Lakers found a chance and doubled the tally. Wouter Hermkens received a penalty-corner and successfully converted it into a goal to establish their first lead into the game. The first half of the play concluded with Canberra Lakers sitting on top by a
single goal edge, 2-1.
SA Hotshots and Canberra Lakers resumed the game in quite similar way, but it was completely dominated by the latter one. Lucas Judge of the Lakers managed to take the ball in front of the crossbars and slammed it into the goal-net. In the later time, Hermkens
converted another short-corner and expanded the lead up to three goals, 4-1.
The back-to-back goals from the Lakers put the Hotshots under intense pressure. In the 51st minute of the game, Daniel Borrett took the ball under his possession and attacked from the right side. His low-flicking shot moved into the crossbars.
After the seven minutes, another player from Lakers, Glenn Turner, scored a goal through field effort and increased the advantage up to five goals. However, it was the final offence from the Canberra Lakers in the game.
On the other side, the players from Hotshots had hopes to make a comeback into the game. With five minutes into the play, Mathew McGregor scored a goal, but it could not save them from a heavy margin defeat. Canberra Lakers won the game by four goals, 6-2.
