Question:

Cancel a credit card before it arrives?

I applied for a new Discover card last week and was required to send in some information to verify and complete the application. I faxed them the required information and was told they would have it and complete my application within 24-48 hours max. Its now 5 days later and they say they didn't receive it, but confirmed that I did send the fax to the correct number. (I am assuming they probably lost it because it was confirmed on my fax machine) At this point I am tired of the run around and want to know if I cancel my application will it still show the card on my credit report?

Also, if I end up applying for another card (AMEX lets say) are they going to flip out that I just applied for a Discover?

  1. Ok let me add my 2 cents.  SHOPPING AROUND HURTS YOUR CREDIT SCORE! REGARDSLESS!   if you apply for credit and it's processed, regardless if you're approved or not/ or open the line of credit or not, it shows on your credit as an inqury.   Banks/ companies that extend credit dont give a rats behind if you were accepted or not, all they care about is HOW OFTEN YOU NEED CREDIT.   and multiple inqry's will make companies, like AMEX  very weiry of extending credit to you.  my advice to you?  you have a confrmation that Discover recvd the info they requested.  you've applied for a credit line w/ them, if u cancel the app.  that just means that you dont want what you applied for.  the point is that you applied in the first place, and it will be an inqury on ur credit for 2 yrs.  u can talk to AMEX and explain to them, 9 times out of 10 they will listen, ONLY if your credit score meets their prerequisites..... dont beleive in the shopping around hipe.  I must tell you, bc for every credit u apply for, a few points is taken off your score, regardless!

  2. Yes American Express would flip out if you just applied for a Discover and then applied for them.  AMEX usually wants people with the best credit.  Applying for 2 credit cards within 45 days makes you seem desperate for money ultimately lowering your credit score.

  3. This will not show up as a card, because you never completed the application process.  You're not canceling the card, you never got it.  All you're canceling is the application.

Amex won't have a problem because the credit card companies (and the credit scores) recognize shopping around.  They understand that people may apply to several cards at once.  As long as you only ACCEPT one, you're okay.

  4. It will probably show up on your credit report, as even if you next day cancel when you apply at a kiosk it shows up (hence why many students at college campuses give fake social security and phone numbers when they sign up for the free things).

Other card companies most likely won't be upset that you just applied b/c they just see business, they'll just be happy you went with them, even if you'd kept both, they'd be happy for another customer.
