I'm wanting to cancel my telus contract but am unsure if they can still legally ding you up to $250 on the remaining contract. I looked at the site and it doesn't say anything. So if I do cancel can they legally ding me here in Canada. Also I heard Koodo is an offshoot of Telus. Is it?

  1. Yes they can charge the cancellation fee.  The information is here:

    http://www.telusmobility.com/on/pcs/term...

Basically it is $20 x number of remaining months, minimum $100.

As for Koodo, yes they are Telus.  If you don't like CDMA or the Telus network, then there is nothing you can do about except switching companies.  However, if you are strictly talking about pricing, they are apples and oranges.

First, there are no system access fees or 911 fees with Koodo.  Second, there are no "contracts", but a "tab".  You can put up to $150 off the price of the phone "on the tab", and pay the remaining cost of the phone when you walk out the store.  The tab gets deducted by 10% of the monthly bill.  (For example, your bill is $50 a month. So each month $5 gets taken off the tab.  With $150 "on the tab", the tab will be paid off in 30 months.  If you choose $75 phone, the tab will get paid off in 15 months if you put all of $75 on the tab.)

Once you used up the tab, you can cancel the plan without penalty.  If you want to cancel earlier, just pay off the remainder of the tab and walk away - so the "cancellation" cost is no more than $150.
