i had a holiday booked, we decided to cancel VERY early on as someone dropped out, another person wanted to go in his place but we do not want to pay cancellation fees. i was under the impression that i could instruct the bank to cancel any payment being taken out without my permission. is this true. i am not trying to rip the holiday company off but i find the suggestion that i must pay for this as a rip off since it has only been pencilled in and no other money has changed hands.

  1. You can do that, but probably the co. will not leave you and recover cancellation fees.

  2. yes you can go in to ur bank and tell them not to alow any payments to a certain company/person..

  3. If it's a cheque or an automatic funds withdrawal, ask for a "stop payment". It's easy, and will cost you a fee probably from $7-10.

The reason why the bank charges you a fee is because they have to pay someone to go through inches thick reports looking for people's cheques and EFTs that they have cancelled, and send them back. It's really not their fault that your trip was cancelled so please don't bring an attitude when you go to the bank. Ah, just venting now, sorry.

  4. Did you sign anything? If you signed your 'booking forms', unfortunately the holiday company can send your details to their legal department, to get the deposit from you, although this is rare. If someone dropped out and you can replace them you should only have to pay a 'name change fee' and that person would pay the original deposit.
