Question:

Cancun, Mexico...Have you been? What to do?

My husband and I will be leaving for vacation in Cancun in two weeks for several days with a group of friends. I have never been but a couple of the people in the group have been before. Unfortunately, they aren't very helpful when it comes to planning things to do (they're much more interested in the all inclusive free alcohol at the hotel and being drunk every day ::eye roll:: ). We are staying at the Riu Cancun. Anyone have ideas on things to do while we are there or things that are not to be missed? We will not always stay together as a group so no worries on how few or how many of us actually go anyplace. From mild to wild, I'm looking for your best suggestions. Thanks!

  1. I've been but it was 13 yrs ago. You can go para-sailing on the beach, see the myan ruins, temples etc. Best advice, when you check into your hotel, ask the front desk for brochures. Most things do not need to be planned ahead. Make sure you do use the safe deposit box at the hotel to store your valuales if you are not taking them with you. You will have fun. Carlos and Charlies is a great restuarant to eat at and they love to involved the crowd.

  2. Call the watersports, tours and fun experts at 1-888-862-3806 they are the best. www.cancuncatamarans.com

  3. My famiily and I cruise every year. Our Ships normally dock in Cozumel. (I recommend cruising for your next vacation, much more economic) Cozumel is about fifty miles away from Cancun by ferry. Mr. Sancho's beach has a ton of things to do, whatever your intrests. A full service restaurant, White sand beach,(be careful, the tide's strong)

Water sports such as jet skis, banana boat rides snorkeling, shopping, horseback riding. it's a really nice place to go, If we take a Caribbean cruise next year I want to go back.

  6. Cancun is central to many sights to see. I personally don't care much for Cancun. It is too touristy and American for me.  They have many stores and shopping centers as in the US. I prefer to experience culture, sights and local food. From where you will be located, I highly recommend Chichenitza, pyramid city. Rent a car though so you can stay all day. Hire a guide or else the ruins mean nothing. Stop and shop on your way back in Valladolid. They have a nice downtown with lots of shops and great local restaurants. In the other dircetion, there is Tulum, the ruins of a spiritual city. This one is much smaller but it sits on a cliff on the coast. Take your bathing suits and stay the day. For this trip, you can rent a car or take the local bus for under a dollar a person. Very safe. Another spot is Playa de Carmen. Not so touristy, lots of shopping, restaurants and nice beach. From there take a ferry to Cozumel and sign up for some incredible snorkeling. I highly recommend cozumel.  Two ecological parks that I also recommend, Xcaret and Xel-Ha. Xcaret is in Cancun and Xel-Ha on the other side of Playa de Carmen. Both are great. Xcaret, beside's swimming and snorkeling offers much more. Xel-Ha is more natural and dedicated to the river and beach. If you want a quiet, secluded beach, try puerto Morelos.

With the exception of Chichenitza, all of these are located on the mayan riveria. From the hotel zone to the Mayan Riveria it is about a 45 min drive. I always recommend the local bus system. It's cheap, fast and I don't have to worry about directions. Many tourist use them. Your hotel can tell you where to catch the bus and how to get to the Mayan Riveria. That same bus will take you directly to the night life of Cancun.

    Have fun!
