  1. Bring half the clothes and double the money. It's a fun island with tons of shopping, clubbing and site seeing. The beaches are terrific and the people are hard working.

Bring small bills (dollars, five dollars) for tipping. You can use the ATM's but they give pesos and not small bills.

If you plan to use the bus system, often they don't have change so those dollars will come in handy (65 cents to ride the bus)

Have a great trip and enjoy)

  2. Bring US dollars. Avoid the time share hard sells no matter what they offer you.

  3. I've been three times...it's great, in some ways, but also very commercial.  I would definitely recommend Chitchen Itza as a day trip, and I've never been to Coba' but I will go next time...a relatively new excavation started in the '70's.  I would not recommend Tulum...I was very disappointed...because it's right next to the ocean, most of the ruins are really just a few foundation stones (erosion from the sea salt), and it's a LONG bus ride and if you go on a tour, it's mostly about stopping at places to get you to buy tourist junk. I would also recommend one of the eco parks...I went to Xcaret, which I understood to be one of the better ones, and one that really does support the ecology there, but there are a few...one of the biggest coral reefs in the world is right near Cancun, and you can go snorkeling through an excursion to one of them (also swim with dolphins if you like).  Bring eco-friendly suntan lotion...most places encourage this to preserve the coral reef., and they sell it there, but it's always more pricey in the tourist areas. Bring a soft sided cooler (you know, the type people use for lunches or sixpacks, whatever) and various sized zip loc bags (to carry ice and/or food)...this will allow you to bring water and gatorade with you, and even pack lunches, etc...if you are going to the beach or outlying areas, otherwise, you pay outrageous sums for bottled water/gatorade, and you could risk bacteria from food (again, not an issue at all in the city of Cancun...just in the outlying areas)...there are a lot of little grocery stores, so if you're trying to save $$ (Cancun is expensive for Mexico), you can shop there and pack lunches...Not sure how hot it is there in Nov, but I've been in April, Oct, and June, and it was really hot and humid most of the time, and esp. if you are hiking, swimming, (drinking alcohol) you need to keep yourself very well hydrated.  Bring powdered gatorade with you, and mix it with bottled water.  If you have access to a fridge/freezer, I would freeze it overnight and that would keep the cooler cool (and we wouldn't have to pack ice) In Cancun itself, you can drink the water in the resort areas, but I would not risk it anywhere else!  No ice in your drinks when out in the boonies!  Using credit cards and ATMs overseas is actually cheaper than using traveler's checks because you don't have to pay the fees to buy the checks and exchange them, plus, when the charge goes through, you automatically get the best exchange rate going (in the world) on that date. You can also use your ATM card to get cash vs. traveler's checks, for the same reasons as above (basically, better exchange rates, plus you don't have to spend time looking for a bank or exchange place vs. sight seeing!) Also, if you want to get some local currency before you go (for $$ at the airport for food, for a taxi or bus when you arrive, etc..., and for the first day or two there, esp if you are arriving on a weekend), go to Bank of America on-line...for a small fee (I think it's like $7), you can order foreign currency to either be delivered to your home (you have to be there to sign) or to a local Bank of America branch for pickup...takes 2-3 days only, and it's nice to have some local currency on you when you arrive so you don't have to worry about going to a bank or exchange counter right off the bat. Always agree on the cost of a taxi  ride before you get in, and just say NO! to all the hawkers at the airport trying to sell timeshares, or posing as tourist agencies...they are not valid agencies!!!  If you are interested in tours and/or timeshares, talk to the people who work at your hotel--they will steer you clear of the scams!  Have fun!!!
