  1. Are you into nature? We just recently got back from a vacation to Tulum. The beaches down there are great. You can go on long quiet beach walks south and wind up in the wildlife preserve. We did a jungle trip to Hidden Worlds too which was off the beaten tracks. Sounds a little touristy but really it's not - there weren't many other people there at all. They take you to a little clearing in the jungle where they have some eco-sensitive but really fun activities and some beautiful underground caves with stalagmites and stalactites. I don't know if you want to travel that far but in case you do it's between Playa Del Carmen and Tulum. We found a really cheap price online (check out the Ultimate Adventure  option, that's what we did), here it is:

  2. Do you like the ocean?  The Scuba diving is amazing.  You can also dive the Cenotes (underground water holes).  They are fresh water and breathtaking.  If not certified, you could do it in Cancun in a couple of days.

  3. Ek Balam is a nice archaeological site that not too many tourists get to.  Click the link below

  4. I agree with all of the above. You should definitely check out Hidden Worlds - that's always the first place I take my visitors (I live in the RM). And diving here is great too (mainly cenotes because the experience is unique, but ocean too). Also there are some wonderful Mayan ruins sites that are more off the beaten tracks than the usual touristy ones - Ek Balam as mentioned by Rhino, but also Coba is great. You can still climb the high pyramid there and it's spread out over a much greater area than Tulum (I'm assuming you've already been to Tulum ruins, right?) so you can hire a bicycle to get around. Outside near the car park there's a great lagoon with lots of wildlife (including crocodiles, turtles, wading birds etc). If you hire a car and make a day of it you could check out the spider monkey reserve at nearby Punta Laguna too - it's not far from Coba. You might get more ideas by looking at Trip Advisor.

    Enjoy! :)
