Candeling egg?

when candeling a parakeet egg do you pick it up or will she abandon it ? Im debating on wether i am supposed to pick it up or not b/c i dont want problems.

An egg will be easy to tell if its fertile about a week after she starts to incubate it. How long ago did she lay the egg? They dont always start to sit right away. They may wait til she lays a few more.Hold the egg up to a strong light in a semi darkened room and put the egg over the light. You will be able to see small red veind running thru it if it is fertile.  You need a male to fertilize the egg and to help her care for the chicks.

Good answers from everyone.  May I add --wash your hands withe anti bacterial soap  and do not hold the light on the egg  if its a powerful bulb as the heat can cause the embryo distress

well i am not sure about parakeets  but  most birds  will  go back to  settting  as long as eggs  are away from  nest to long to candle i raised  and candled alot of different chicken eggs with no problem.    second question is how long has she been sitting on  egg  if its only been a few days i would  wait  at leat 7-10 days   so that you will be able to see any  growth inside shell

If you have the sort of candler (or strong torch) that you can take with you, then you just turn out the lights, take the eggs from under her, candle them and slide them back under.  Simple as that.  However, since its only been four days it might be hard to tell, so don't chuck any out yet.

She'll still sit, when a bird goes broody thats it!

yes,you have to pick up the egg,if there is no male don't bother she's just doing what comes naturally to a female bird,at times they will lay eggs without a mate.And you pick it up gently when she is away from the nest and put it above a light i a darkened room and this you do about 7 days after her laying it, if you can see a dark spot and then an air pocket at the end of the egg it's growing inside,sometimes,you don't see a red vein so you cannot always go by that.good luck.
