my cousin has a car in s.c. that she will let me use indefinitly here in n.y.c. can i purchase insurance and register car for nyc while leaving ownership in her name?

  1. The insurance and registration would have to be in HER name, not yours.  

    NY is the toughest state on this- they will NOT accept a policy in the name of someone, when that name is different from the title or registration.


  2. No. The vehicle must be registered in the owners name and the insurance also.

  3. The truth is no, not really. If you want to keep your cousin as the registered owner of the car, that's fine, but he/she has to have the insurance in his/her name. Otherwise your committing insurance fraud.

    However, if you come to NYC with this vehicle and it stays in NYC more than 90 days, than it is required to be registered in NY.

    Easiest thing to do, to avoid any problems, is have your cousin sell you the car for $1 and then you come to NY and register/insure the vehicle in your name.

  4. Cars must be insured under the owners name.
