Question:

Canning Tomatoes problem

by  |  earlier

I have helped my mother can tomatoes for as long as I can remember. It's been at least 10 years since I last canned till this year. I am cold packing and when I go to take jars out of the bath I am finding 3 out of 7 lids are bending. I am wondering what is causing this so I can correct this problem. Am I over filling the jars? Faulty lids? Cooking too long?

I am so confused, please help.

  1. Hello Indiana Hoosier,

I can say from canning experience that I have never had that problem. Try leaving the appropriate amount of head space and see if that helps. How long are you cooking them for?

If you are following normal instructions, even boiling them too long should not cause this to happen. Try some new lids. Do you have enough water in the pan to completely cover the seals?

I hope this helps! Good Luck!
