Cannot connect LAN connection?

I can't connect to the internet with my LAN connection when I plug the ethernet in my laptop it says its connected but when I open Internet Explorer it says that there is no server what should I do.

Internet Explorer would never refer to a server.

Make sure you are not using a proxy server (tools options in IE).

Make sure you have obtained an IP address from your router and ping your own and the gateway (router) address.

did you plug the cable into the machine after it started or before?  Majority of the time you want to plug your Internet cable in and THEN start your machine so it will obtain an ip from the router.
