I have the setup for the wireless router correct, i am able to pull an IP address from the router, but cannot connect to the internet at all. I am thinking that it has something to do with DNS, but not sure. Is there a setting I need to change in the router?

  1. If your getting an IP address but still getting the "404" page, your right it is a DNS error, not a hardware problem. First log into your router and find the stats. Make shore there are two DNS server's IP address listed there. If not, reset the router. Next go to "run" (start menu) type in "cmd" and a console should come up. Type in "ipconfig /all" that will bring up all the network details, but most importlly the DNS servers IP address, do they match? If not type in "ipconfig /renew" and that will reset your network connection. If the two are the same and still getting the "404" page, then your router is getting false DNS servers, try resetting the modem by unplugging it, then wait a while and reset the router. If the problem persists after that, you will need to call your ISP.

    Hope this helps you.

  2. If you have ZoneAlarm and XP, you might have to disable your firewall, download the most recent ZoneAlarm update, update ZoneAlarm, and run Windows update.

More details at ZoneAlarm's site. They had some problem with the last Windows update and I had the same problem.

  3. Try uninstalling and then reinstalling the NIC (Network Interface Card) card. You do this by right clicking on My Computer and then click properties. click on the hardware tab and then go to the device manager. Right click on your wireless card and uninstall it. It will reinstall automaticaly.

  4. Try cloning one of your mac addresses of one of your computers.  Go to Start, (run in XP), type "cmd", press enter.  Now type in this command: "ipconfig /all".  It will show you the MAC address of the network card(s).  Which ever one is being used for the Internet, try cloning that MAC address inside your router.

I had issues at my aunt and uncles house.  If I connected a computer directly to the modem, it would work just fine.  The problem was, we wanted 2 computers on the Internet.  In order to accomplish that, we needed to use a router.  The problem was resolved by cloning the MAC address of one of the computer's network adapters.
