Question:

Cannot connect to the internet on one computer in my network?

I have 3 computers in my household. Two are laptops and one is your regular desktop. For some reason, the WLAN works just fine, so our laptops have a stable internet connection, but the desktop cannot connect.

I did a virus scan, rebooted, reset the router, updated the firmware on the router, even changed the wires. Nothing seems to get the desktop computer back online. What i did notice was the computer's network would switch between no connection and limited connection. And when I connect the desktop directly into the broadband modem, it still cannot connect to the internet.

I did an 'ipconfig' and saw that the gateway address and the DNS were blank.

Anyone have a solution?

  1. If that doesn't work try a new cable from your desktop to your router connected to same or to a different numbered port

    Reload LAN drivers

  2. either your network card is bad.. or you need a winsock fix for the registry..(you can find this on the web for free)  also make sure you have DHCP enabled

  3. go to command prompt.

    Type ipconfig /renew

  4. Make sure the DHCP client is running on the computer (Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Services)

  5. sounds like your router is not assigning an IP to your desktop computer.  you would have to look at the routers logs to see why.  there could be mac filtering in place that prevents your desktop from getting an IP.  Or, the port on the router could be bad, or you could have a bad nic.  try changing ports on the router.  Hook the desktop to the laptop with an ethernet cable.  if the connection icon does not toggle between connected and not connected, the issue is not with the desktop.  if it still toggles, investigate your nic

  6. If your desktop is the one with the broarband connection and your laptops are networking from the desktop  then there is a connection problem there, what you can do is to get in touch with your internet provider and let them know about your connection problem as you are paying for this service. I had the same problem (with networking) I have 2 desktops and one laptop and they all are networking from a DSL Router from my internet service provider (one desktop and the laptop is using window xp, but the new computer , (the other desktop is window vista)  the link to network from would not work with my window vista computer, I had to buy another link so that I would be able to network. Now it work just fine. So talk with someone from your internet service provider and they will tell you just what to do, they will even walk you through the steps. This process will take some time to do so be patience ok. Good Luck
