Question:

Cannot connect to wi-fi

Hey guys...I can not for the life of me figure out why my Acer Aspire 5100 laptop will not connect to my home's wi-fi. To make sure it wasn't the Internet or the computer, I tried to connect with a wired connection. I can indeed to this. It has XP and I did have to download some of the drivers. 2 signals are strong enough for me to connect to, my house and that of my neighbors across the street. However when I try to connect it says something like "trying to renew IP address" and then an error box with "cannot renew IP address". Totally lost...I pick up computer things when I deal with them, but I am not by far a computer geek. What I'm trying to say is I'm not down with computer lingo...Any help is greatly appreciated!

  1. you could have some wifi security enabled connect to see if your router has a wep key or has limited the access to certain mac addresses or special assignedd ips ( the last 2 things require configuration in the router)

  2. I would try reboot the wireless router and then so what happens.

If your wireless is not encrypted, my guess is that your router has reached its max connections, meaning the same way connect to your neighbors wireless, then same thing is happening to you.

  3. if you look on the side there is a wi-fi switch turn that on and then there is 2 computers with an x and click on that and connect to the strongest signal

  4. like katrina said, just try and find the one with the strongest signal, and if your still not connecting, then there's something wrong with your modem/router.

  5. wi-fi is magic.
