Question:

Cannot find wireless network?

Recently, I just moved into a new house. For a couple of weeks I used an old modem from my previous home and a linksys G router for all my purposes and it worked great! But a couple days ago, AT&T stopped my modem from accessing the internet and instead I have to use this 2Wire Gateway Router/Modem my stepdad recieved when he signed up for AT&T. Well it kinda sucks, it wants to control everything for you and well that's a whole different story. I have 1 laptop, a PS3, and a desktop with built in wireless that I want to hook up. The playstation works *even though the signal is a little lower* but for my desktop I can't find the signal at all. I know it's out there, but my wireless desktop cannot find the signal.

PS: The Desktop and the PS3 are in the same room so it's not a distance / location problem.

Thanks!!

  1. From what you said, you switched from a DSL modem and wireless router as 2 separate devices to a DSL gateway which is a router and modem in one device.  There should be nothing wrong with this.  My aunt and uncle have one of these router and modem all in one (called DSL gateways).  Out of the box on my aunt and uncle's wireless, the wireless is disabled by default.  You need to go into the interface by going to http://192.168.0.1 or http://192.168.1.1 and enable the wireless.

If it is not disabled by default, other things you can try is to clone one of the MAC (physical address) of one of your computers or change the wireless channel from 6 to 1 or 11.  Do not change it to any other channels besides 1, 6, or 11.  To get the physical address, go to Start, Run (skip this step in Vista), type cmd, press enter.  Now this command: ipconfig /all  This will give you the MAC or phsical addresses for every network adapter attached to the computer.  Make sure you look for the one that is actually connected to the Internet.

  2. First you have to be sure that built in wireless card is on and configure to with Window configuration for wireless Networks otherwise you will never find the network. Also you have to be sure that  the 2wire in on. I work with the same system. You stepdad might have asked A&T to turn it off. You will need to turn it on again. You can do it if you know your stepdad passwork for A&T. This is the network summary website

www.gateway.2wire.net  you can manage everything form there.
