Cannot get key to start motor?

Question

I just swapped outboard motors on my boat and cannot get the key to start the motor that I installed. Both motors were Mercurys. The plug on the wiring harness looks the same. The motor I installed is a 1983 model and the controls were new in 1993. Not sure if this is the problem. I do have power to the motor and can jump start the motor across the solenoid.

hey mike, if the end of your lanyard as an O-shape at the end, then it's a different problem, but with the smaller Merc's, you sometimes need 2 lanyard. One for theft reasons and another for safety that you hook onto yourself. hope that solves your problem,    Austin
