Cannot install windows vista ultimate

Cannot install windows vista ultimate 64 bit on my computer when I have xp installed. Can boot from the 32 bit version disk though but I want the 64 bit. Tried booting it from start-up by booting from CD drive first but still ignores it and boots from HD. I have a intel duo x86 chip 6400 and need to know how to install windows vista retail version on my PC
