I work for a busy ambulance company as a dispatcher. I was recently offered a job for a county closer to my home doing police/fire/ambulance dispatching. The pay is pretty much the same, benefits are better at the new job, new job is closer...BUT I'm so comfortable where I am. I recently found out at the new job I'd have to work 4 weekends on and 3 off. I'm used to working every other weekend. My husband also in public safety works every other weekend. I guess what I'm saying is I'm worried about our family life suffering from working so many weekends, and not being able to spend time with my family. I have to make a decision today and I still am so undecided. My gut tells me if I'm this undecided it's probably not meant to be......help!!!

  1. The weekends on and off - is that something you can negotiate with your potential new employer?  Its worth a shot to ask.  If not, its a personal choice, but the fact that you brought up the impact on your family life tells me you're carefully thinking about the big picture of the change - a good thing.

What it comes down to is a personal choice.  I always put family first, but some are more career driven than others.  Better benefits and closer proximity to your home would be a bad trade off if the result is less time with your family which may lead to anxiety and stress.
