just got my letter in the mail...i am being summoned to jury selection a day after my vacation starts. i have proof that trip is paid for...just wondering if anyone knows if they will be kind enough to postpone my interview? pamphlet attached to letter (FAQs) indicates they *may* postpone the date provided i prove that trip is paid....not liking the word *may*...are my chances good that they will cooperate with me?

  1. Write to the clerk of the Court which issued the letter, stating your circumstances and you would like to be considered after whatever your come back date is from your vacation. In fact if there is a phone number it is worth a call.

  2. What state are you in?  I have a friend that just got called, he called them up and said he would be out of the country.  They said okay, and he offered to do it in August..They said they would call him then, no problem.

    Just call them up!

  3. I think "Everyone" was on vacation during the O.J. trial too!

    You should be "OK!"

  4. Contact them, but you may still have to go.

  5. The court wouldn't say "may" continue your jury date if it wasn't prepared to ever offer the continuance.

Go ahead and request the new date right away, indicating your pre-planned, pre-paid vacation is in conflict with the noticed date.

Most state jury systems are trying their best to accommodate jurors with schedule conflicts but who are otherwise prepared to honor their legal obligation to serve.

  6. Chances are very good if you give plenty of notice and document your claim.  If you call at the last minute it won't work.  Call now and ask what you need to do to postpone (but not avoid) your duty.
