Canny Corrina pulls off uncanny victory at Newcastle
Newcastle Greyhound Stadium was the place to be this morning for thrilling 480m greyhound racing action. The track was rocking with an action-packed 12-race card.
The first race of the day, an A8 race held at 11:11, featured a big upset victory from Canny Corrina (5-2). Coming out of trap one, she crowded first and led the run in to place first in 30.02. But Canny Corrina was not this race’s favourite. That title belonged to Whats Ocurring, who despite having 7-4 odds to win disappointed many with a last-place finish of 30.34.
Blue Noodles (10-1) finished second with a time of 30.12, 1¼ lengths behind the leader. Behind Blue Noodles was Bedrock Jack (5-1), whose 30.16 time earned him a third place finish. He was only a ½ length behind second place.
Fourth place went to Brimardon Planet (8-1), who orbited around the track in 30.32 to finish 2 lengths behind Bedrock Jack. Tedo Wolfy (3-1) had a clear run, but only managed to place fifth in 30.33. He was only a head behind fourth place.
Climbing Dymon finished strong in the A3 race at 11:28. The 2-1 favourite led the run up, and picked up the win in 29.05. A neck’s length separated first place from second, and Crash Domino (7-2) finished well in 29.07 to take second place. The third spot was claimed by Tursdale Happy (5-2), who was 2½ lengths behind Crash Domino in 29.27.
2 ¼ lengths short of third place was fourth-place finisher, Droopys Marvin (16-1), who finished the race with a time of 29.45. Up Tempo (5-1) placed fifth with 29.53, just 1 length behind fourth. Taking sixth was Geordie Nile (7-2), who finished a neck behind Up Tempo with a time of 29.56.
The 11:42 A6 race saw another heavily-favoured contender finish last. 9-4 favourite, Worldwide Blaze, had a very disappointing race, failing to deliver on his top billing. The victor of the race was Droopys Evoy (4-1), who led the run in, cruising to a 29.97 finish to claim first place.
Second place went to Wolfys Sister (4-1), who crowded first and ran on to a 30.07 finish. This was 1¼ lengths behind Droopys Evoy. In the third position was Hammys King (7-2), who was just a shoulder’s length behind second. He matched Wolfys Sister’s time of 30.07.
Miss Leanne (6-1) missed out on third place by 1¾ lengths, finishing fourth in 30.21. Rounding out the pack were Coolemount Sandy (7-2), and favourite Worldwide Blaze. Coolemount Sandy finished fifth in the race in 30.29, 1 length behind fourth place, while Worldwide Blaze led to third and baulked, finishing in 30.45. This put him 2 lengths behind the fifth-place finisher.
Greyhound racing at Newcastle Greyhound Stadium resumes tomorrow evening with a 15-race card that will be as action-packed as ever. The races begin with an A7 race at 18:38.
