What should you do when approaching a low-head dam in a canoe or kayak?

  1. HI Nathan,

    I assume you're asking because you want to paddle over it / run it.  First, I'm going to tell you not to do it.  Below are a bunch of links explaining why.  Portage around any dam that is on the waterway you are paddling.  Please look thru the links below.


  2. rig some airbags, and make sure the water is deep enough at the bottom so you don't crush the bow

  3. It is important to stay away from low head dams. Know your route and portage around a low head dam. Many people have been killed at them due to the swirling undertow and back current.
