Canoeing with a dog?

I have a large dog (125 lb) who loves the water and we would like to take him with us on a lake that we go to every year. We are looking for a stable canoe that is decently priced. I live in orange county california so any suggestions on where to buy one or what model would be a good fit for us would be appreciated. Thanks.

  1. make one like the indians did.

  2. hahahahaha, that would be a sight to see! good luck!!

  3. Old Town canoes are the BEST.

We canoe a few times a year.  I see people with dogs all of the time.  Make sure you have a doggie life jacket for your pooch.

  4. You can always choose whatever canoe you like and get an outrigger for it... it would increase your weight capacity and also make it considerably more stable.

  5. there is no easy way to bring a dog on any type of boat or water craft. They wouldn't like the motion of the boat and either jump off/ out, vomit, hide some were, or start freaking out entirely. Your best bet is to leave your dog behind.

  6. my advice is this.. first time out do not take anything with you in the canoe.. just the safety stuff.. all it takes is something to get his attention and your swimming ... always make sure you haver a life jacket on and also that anything in the boat is tied on.. you can also get some foam to place in the bow of the boat so it will never sink.. pool noodles work too but arent nice looking ..
