Canon 100-300mm lens w/Canon 10D and I get intermittent ERR99 message.?

I randomly get the ERR99 message when I use a Canon 100-300mm lens. When I take remove the battery I can start using the lens again but sometimes I can take 5 or 100 pictures and I get the ERR99 message again. I don't have this issue with my other lenses only this one.

It's unfortunately out of warranty but what's the cost of sending back to Canon? Is there something that I can do to fix on my own?

  1. My guess it that the lens is not setting properly.  Try remounting the lens ... make sure that the lens is set properly (some have to be set at the cameras smallest aperture using a physical lock on the lens).

  2. The ERR99 seems to be related to lens compatibility. However, your lens is an EF lens, so it should be compatible with the EOS 10D without problems.
