  1. I would get the xsi

  2. If you even have to ask, you'd be better off with the XSi.

  3. Trick Question ?

    Definitely The Canon Eos 40d

It's more expensive for a reason, you get much more. don't mind the canon xsi's twelve megapixels, it doesn't mean much. Most of that is just for advertising. The eos 40d is a much more advanced, and professional camera. You should get it hands down definitely.

The canon eos 40d is a " prosumer " dslr aimed at the high-end enthusiast, and isn't for playing around.

However, the rebel xsi is an average DSLR, and is by no means a " prosumer" camera, don't mind the 12 megapixel

    sensor of the xsi.

  4. The main difference with the XSi and 40D is build quality, processing speed (frames per second) and studio flash socket.

The XSi has more resolution and a better live view mode.

The 55-250 lens is a goodie, you might want to use some  of the price difference to upgrade from the 18-55 lens (maybe the sigma 18-50 f2.8 DC?  The sigma 10-20 DC & Canon 50mm f1.8?)
