Question:

Canon 400D or Nikon D60?

I've been looking at buying an SLR camera for quite some time now, and I've narrowed it down to these two cameras - the Canon 400D or the Nikon D60. I've heard both are good beginner cameras, as this is my first SLR, but the Nikon will take you that little bit further and you won't need to upgrade as soon as you might with the Canon.

Do you have any personal preferences with either camera? Do you just naturally prefer Canons or Nikons?

I've heard that a Nikon would also be better because Canon can only take Canon-made lenses, while Nikons can take any? Is this true?

I'm up to any other camera suggestions but I am really looking at either one of these two cameras.

Thanks everyone!

  1. Well, Canon can also take Tamron, Sigma, and other third party lenses, as long as they were made for Canon cameras. So, Canon cameras can't only take  Canon brand lenses. And, Nikon cameras, can only mount lenses which were designed for Nikon cameras ( with the f-mount ) So, you can't pull a lens from a Canon, and expect it to work on the Nikon, you'd have to use an adapter for that, but it's can't take just any lens, that's not how it works.

These cameras are pretty evenly matched, the image quality is almost identical, i mean, they have the same specs. Same two and a half inch screen, same ten megapixel sensor, same anti-dust, same everything, except some small little quirks. I naturally prefer Nikon DSLR's, my Nikon d40 is a marvelous camera, the images have so much color, and  my  6 megapixel point and shoot can't compare. The larger sensor really makes a difference. Oh, and another thing to mention if that the Nikon d60 can't autofocus all sorts of lenses, i thought that was necessary to mention.

Ok, back to this, they are almost the same camera, so the camera you get will depend on which one you prefer personally ( in terms of the brand name ) However, being the Nikon Addict i am, i think you should get the Nikon, just because it's a Nikon. But, one's not better than the other if you know what i mean. Both are very nice cameras. You'd be happy with anyone. Just get the Nikon d60, make it Easy.

  2. Any answer you get will show prejudice based on brand loyalty.

Both cameras will take after market lenses. So there is no difference there.  Both are great cameras and will give you terrific results. Here is a side-by-side comparison of both cameras. They are so similar in features that it may not help.

Do you have any friends that have either? If so you may be able to borrow lenses.

  3. Nikon D60 my dad has one and it takes great pics!

  4. Log onto www.cnet.com Compare the two cameras side by side (specs) then read Cnets review, then users reviews. This helps discover little problems that other's have seen.
