Hello,

I am so much need serious help with camera lens. I bought digital camera Canon 40D over the weekend and for $1,199.00 I get Canon 40D, 1 gb high speed memory card, 1 2hrs. battery, 1 half an hr. batter and these 2 lenses, 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 and 75-300mm f/4.0-5.6.

The more and more I read about those two lenses, the mrore and more make me think I should buy the lens seperatly. Did I make a good buy. or should I return those lenses and buy a better on that have "image stablelizer "?

Is this a good len to buy? Canon 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens. It have "Image Stablelizer" and it is about $330.00.

Also Canon 70-200mm f/4.0L USM, is this a good lens to buy and it cost about $580. Well, that is what I found on the internet.

Thank you for all your help again. Have a good night.

  1. Yes, those 2 lenses are with higher spec but give you shorter range (28mm - 200mm) compare to the lenses that you have (18mm - 300mm).

I will suggest you learn to work with them. If you still don't like it, then trade it.

  2. Yes, those two lenses are not the best. The 40D is a great camera and deserves much better lenses. I would definitely return them. The EF-S 18-55mm f3/5-5.6 with IS is a much improved version. It would be ok as a starter lens, but you may soon find yourself wanting a much better lens.

The 28-135 (even though there are much better lenses available) makes an ok general purpose zoom lens.

The EF 70-200 mm f/4 L USM, on the other hand, is an excellent 'pro' quality lens. I prefer the IS version, but it does cost a little more...it's by far the best lens of all the ones you mention.

For wide angle shots, landscapes etc. have a look at the EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM.

Don't forget to also consider prime lenses (single focal length). They are generally faster (wider aperture), which is great for low-light, portraits etc and they tend to have sharper image quality...
