  1. Manual mode? There is no time to fiddle with the settings if you are taking loads of photos.

I put mine in P mode.

If you're doing an event, a prime lens is sharp and fast, but it's not as flexible as a zoom.

Sample above is Canon 24-70 mm f 2.8 L (with Canon 5D-so your coverage will not be as wide at all.)

  2. I agree with Pooky. P mode for when you want the flash to do all the work for you. Av and Tv wont utilize the flash like you think it would. M mode means you have to dial it in, maybe you have time maybe you dont. In all these modes you get to choose the ISO as well which has an influence on the flashes effectiveness. You can also set a custom white balance and shoot in RAW for even greater control in post processing.

Your basic modes have their places. If you read up in your manual it will tell you what the camera is designed to do. They have ISO, white balance, and other things preprogrammed. You may get good results, but if your camera sees something wrong you are going to have to put it in a more manual mode to get around that. You should know how to shoot manual, even if you dont use it. You will know more of what your camera is capable of.
