I'l planning to buy a canon 70-200mm for events, concerts and indoor sports. I was thinking to get the 2.8 non-is but I think its too heavy for me while 4.0 is is much lighter and I can attached my flash 580 ex II.

  1. I would get the 2.8, if I could afford one, because of the well, 2.8.

Though with the IS on the 4.0, it's said that you can handhold the lense 2-3 stops.

  2. What camera will you use it with? It will be 112 - 320 on the 1.6 cropped sensor.

If you're going to use it indoor, the flash may not be able to reach the subjects, or they may not allow you to use it all together. The faster, 2.8, would work better. I realize how much more expensive the 2.8 IS is.

I had the f 4 one, but replaced it with the 100-400 mm a while ago. I do miss how light it is. It's a great lens.

This is not the lens you have mentioned, but do consider a larger aperture lens, like f 2 (135 mm f 2), like this:

    or this one

    without flash.
