Canon EF 50mm f1.8 II?

Oy.

This is one of the cheapest lenses on the market. And it's part of a DSLR package I have my eye on.

I've heard it stinks, you'll be lucky to get one clear picture out of 50. And I've heard it's very good for the price.

Any opinions?

(I'd be using it indoors for the most part)

The EF 50mm f/1.8 is cheap and plasticky. It even has a plastic mount, BUT it has very good image quality, capable of producing very sharp images...so, I don't know where you heard that "one clear picture out of 50", nonsense.

It's perfect for indoors and portraits.

It is one of the best lenses Canon makes, it may be inexpensive, but it is sharp as a tack, and a great value for the money.  I have one, it's one of my favorite lenses.  I'd say get it, even if it were not a part of the package.  Unless you want to spend a bit more and get the Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 or the Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L

The best way to answer this question is to try it on your camera and see how well it works.  The results might surprise you.  I suspect the lens is not as cheap as you may think.  Canon is a vertcally integrated company, so they produce an inexpensive lens but they are not likely to put their name on junk since they can't compete in price for the true junk lenses and it would tarnish their name.
