What go you think of these two lenses?

The latter is a part of the 40D kit, but apparently a very worthy piece of glass. I'd probably use it as a walk around lens, though wondering about quality and vignetting and also thinking quite a bit about the life of the format.

Opinions?

The former is a wide angle and I'd use for city shots, landscapes.

With this I'm wondering about barrel distortion, vignetting and focus speed (though I'm not adverse to using MF).

Thanks.

  1. If you want absolutely distortion free wide angle shots, you will have to buy the very expensive Canon PC lens, but there are programs that can remove conversance issues and barrel distortion of the perfectly wonderful 10-22 mm wide angle zoom lens.

What tiny vignetting you may be able to find while doing a scientific test of the lenses will NOT show up when in practical use

  2. I just bought a 30D off eBay that came with the 28-135mm. I was originally planning on reselling the lens but once it got here I changed my mind. I'm very happy with that lens! It's a great walk around lens, it does good macro for not being a macro lens, having a 3.5 aperture is nice, and it's well built. My one complaint is that I wish it went a little wider. For the price this is definitely a great lens.

As for the life of the EF-S system, I wouldn't worry TOO much about that. The 50D has just been announced and it will still use the EF-S. That gives you at least another 18 months of EF-S lifetime. Yes, that isn't hugely long, but the nice thing about EF-S is that you can get similar-quality lenses for a much lower price. And even if Canon finally does away with EF-S, there's going to be plenty of people who still own Rebels and x0Ds that will buy your EF-S lenses off you.

  3. I'm personally a fan of the EF 28-135.
