Im looking to upgrade my rebel xti and im having a hard time choosing between a canon EOS 40D, 5D and 1DS. I do a lot of portraiture work and some landscape. Im an amature photographer working my way up to making photography my Profession. The 40D and 5D are more my price range but Im going to be keeping this camera for a long time and I want to make sure I make a good investment. What camera do you recommend for my type of work? Also I have an EF 50mm f/1.4 lens for my Rebel. Im pretty sure that lens is compatible with the 40D but is it for the 5D and 1DS?

extra info:

* I have a Canon Speedlite 580EX II Flash but I much rather use natural light, so I need a camera that works well in all lighting situations.

* Since I will also be using this camera on children (toddlers and babies) I need a camera that is fast! : )

Thank You to all who respond!

  1. I would go with the 40D. There are more advantages to that choice in your case than any other camera. First off it is new technology, you have live view, which is great with kids, you can keep your face clear to engage the kid. Second you get 6.5 frames per second, this is the fastest camera in all 3 you mentioned, also great with kids.

Now don't get me wrong, the 5D and 1DS are superior in quality compared to the 40D, but for the price and the additional advantages I think the 40D is right for you.

The other thing is, it isn't a bad thing to have a 40D and a 5D down the road. Both cameras complement each other and make a good set for any photographer. I personally own a 20D and a 5D, I use each for very different things.

    Best of luck.

  2. A 5D and better lenses. Not that your current lens is a bad lens but you can never have enough choices. The 5D is full frame so your 50mm lens will seem wider.

If a lens fits an XTi it will fit a 40D. The 5D will not take the EF-s lenses but you have an EF lens so your good. The 40D will take EF-s lenses.

The 1Ds may be more than you need. All the cameras that you picked are good cameras. But the 1Ds is alot more money and for what you have stated you wouldnt get any more use out of it than a 5D.

Just to add, there is alot of speculation that the next version of the 5D will come out this fall. This is pure rumor as they said the same thing for last fall. Canon is pretty regular with releasing a new *something* every 18 months, and I guess the 5D is due for an upgrade. At this point its all rumor though and nothing is substantuated.
