I have read so many reviews that my head aches!!!

I took a Nikon 60 yesterday but it does not have the live view like Canon Eos.

And does it really matter that the body of Nikon is plastic?

For a beginner like me in DSLR what is the best choise?

  1. Nikon. It does wonders for me. You should upgrade to the D80 :]

  2. Both of these are excellent camera's.The xs is newer and has 12mp.I am a Canon guy myself so I like the xs,but I think you would be happy with either one.

  3. "And does it really matter that the body of Nikon is plastic?"

All of the DSLR body's are plastic even Canon.

The Nikon D90 will be coming out soon what I've read it will have live view and live view with video, I hope that they are wrong about the video part, it shouldn't be in a DSLR.

  4. I highly recommend Canon XTi. It offers the same pro features that you would find in high end Canon/Nikon cameras. Most photographers will tell you that lenses are more important than Cameras. You can buy a Canon XTi with a kit lens for around $550 and save money to buy extra lens or external flash. Most begginers spend most of their budget on the camera body and mount a cheap lens on their camera. Built in flash and kit lenses do not produce good results.

The Rebel XTi is compatible with all Canon lenses in the EF lineup so you can mount high end lenses like L series on XTi. You can also mount any Canon flashes such as the great 580ex II on XTi.

You can find plenty of great deals on ebay:

    Good luck!

  5. Live view is only necessary if you are planning on shooting through a microscope or telescope ... my guess is you are not.

The idea of holding a camera and lens that weighs around two pounds at arm's length and expecting not to have a lot of camera movement, which will blur your photos is something you may want to rethink.

I have a Nikon D300 with that feature and besides it being rarely used, it uses up the batteries very fast.  I used the live view when shooting fire works on July 4th and instead of getting over 1000 shots on one battery charge, the battery was dead within about 45 minutes.

The auto-focus on the Canons does not work when in live view .. another consideration.

    So, what to buy?

Go into your local camera store and hold both in your hands and see which one feels the best in YOUR hands and has the easiest menu to follow when setting up various features like white balance, ISO and formatting.

When you say the Nikon is plastic, it sounds like it may be just a little better than a Holga ... the so called plastic is a space age high tech polymer which in many ways is more ridged than metal cameras.

So, do you want to save some money and use the savings to buy a second lens?

  6. Don't worry about live view on an SLR.  It's pretty much useless. Unless you need to set your camera on a tripod, take your time to compose, etc. For quick, on the go, point and shoot kind of stuff you'll find that live view makes no sense.

I feel like I'm working for the company here....:)  Again, I would really recommend Canon's Rebel XSi as a starter SLR. It's a very good camera.

I've had a chance to work with one a bit and I'm seriously considering getting one for myself. It performs better than the Nikon d40 and d60 I've used.

    Give it a look.
