Japan is the leader in electronics technology and assembly but, in recent years, the cost of making it in Japan has increased. Companies have now looked to Thailand and China to make their products however, quality control is not as stringent as Japan so some products lack in quality and workmanship.

I should say both are good.  Canons that made in China are acatually being assembled in China, major parts are still direct transferred from Japan Canon.  Being a Canon factory in China, their production have to pass the same quality control as in Japan.

I'd say the quality of products that are "Made in Japan" tend to be superior. However, very few electronics, especially cameras are made in Japan these days. Most tend to be made in China. I don't have a problem with their quality though, but I do prefer Japanese assembly because of their solid reputation. Having said that, I would NOT be dissuaded or hesitant from buying a Chinese made product.

Both are good. Nothing is fully made in one place. They are all assembled.
