  1. Although 1.2F is superior than 1.4F due to higher transperancy ,the question itself is void when you want use big flash on your camera.

  2. Both are really great lenses.  The optics behind a 50mm lens really have been perfected.  Both the 1.2L and 1.4 versions of the 50mm can produce really sharp pictures and both perform well in low light.  The type of shooting you described though, you can save yourself some money and get the 1.4.  Shooting with a Speedlite 580EX, you're not going to need the 1.2 aperture.  Both lenses are really soft wide open, so you'll probably want to shoot at f/2.8, f/4, or higher for more sharpness anyways.

I've shot with both lenses and really only recommend the 1.2L when:

    1) Money is of absolutely no concern.

    2) You'll be shooting something where the only available light is candles.

    3) You'll be shooting in conditions where you need the weather sealing found on the 1.2L.

    4) You only own L series lenses and wouldn't consider anything else but an L series lens.

Since you are attaching it to a 450D, you don't get the full benefit of the weather sealing.

Of the three versions Canon makes (I'm excluding the macro since it is for a different purpose than the three other 50mm primes), the f/1.4 gives you the best value for its performance.  The f/1.8 is a good starter lens, but the 1.4 performs much better due to its ultrasonic motor.  I've already mentioned why I think the 1.4 is a better value over the 1.2L.

  3. The 1.2 is an "L" series lens, which is of superior construction, and superior optics.  The aperture of 1.2 may not seem like a great difference compared to the 1.4, but it really is a huge difference, especially when shooting in low light.

  4. If you flash guide number is 30, then you'll be shooting between f2.8 and f11. So your choice doesn't matter.
