Question:

Canon Powershot A590 IS vs. Canon Powershot SX100 IS?

The main difference is the zoom (A590: 4x; SX100: 10x), but is there any other big differences between the cameras? The SX100 is $50 more... but the A590, as far as I can tell, is higher ranked by experts. So I just need a comparison from past users, or just camera buffs... thanks.

  1. I own a A590IS, and find it to be a very capable camera.

Things I like about the A590: good performance to cost ratio. It's a very inexpensive camera, yet has many features not found on similarly priced cameras. Excellent full manual control. Good battery life, using easily replaceable and cheap rechargeable AAs. Good Zoom for camera in it's class. Able to change out SD card when mounted on tripod. I use this camera to do some product like shooting, and it's nice being able to pop out the card to do a quick download to my computer to see how the image looks blown up. Nice form factor, it's fairly compact. Can add accessory filters with accessory tube attachment. (like close-up diopters, color filters, etc). Optical viewfinder for those days you shoot in bright sunlight.

Things I don't like about the A590, 640x480, slow 20  fps rate in movie mode, movies are slightly choppy. (30 fps is standard).

Things to like about the SX100.

Excellent ultra-zoom lens. Good movie mode (640x480, 30fps). AA batteries. Supports remote capture to your computer.

    Things I wouldn't like.

Can't remove card when camera is on tripod. No optical view finder. Slow to charge flash.
