Question:

Canon Powershot A590.... vs.... Canon Powershot SX100?

The main difference is the zoom (A590: 4x; SX100: 10x), but is there any other big differences between the cameras? The SX100 is $50 more... but the A590, as far as I can tell, is higher ranked by experts. So I just need a comparison from past users, or just camera buffs... thanks.

  1. try searching for some pictures in Flickr, pictures that were taken by real users, it might help you as well in deciding which camera to buy aside from reading reviews about your camera.

  2. Both cameras have exactly the same sized sensor, so image quality should be more or less the same. They also have full manual controls (aperture & shutter priority).

The main difference is that the SX100 IS has the longer optical zoom, a slightly better high quality movie mode (30fps v 20 fps) and a higher res. LCD (175,000 pixels v 115,000).

So, the SX100 IS has the advantage (even though it's minus an optical viewfinder and has slow flash recycle times).

For a slightly better camera have a look at the 6x optical,  A650 IS. It has a slightly larger sensor, full manual controls and the very handy, vari-angle (flip out & twist) LCD. It's 12MP are probably overkill, though.
