If I am looking for manual controls (exposure, focus), is the upgrade to the G9 worth it?

  1. The G9 is almost like a slr kind of quality, but is still a point and shoot.

The G9 shoots in raw format, which is nice to have, quality vs the 720. The G9 will be the best.

If you want to really really get into it buy a Canon Rebel XT, its same price, but u get slr quality

  2. Jake's right.  With an SLR, you just set it where you want it.  With the G9 or any other P&S, you haev to go into the menus to change the settings and it is painfully slow.  A Rebel XT or Nikon D40 will not cost much more than a G9.

  3. I would personally go with the Rebel XT or XTi. You get all the manual controls and far superior photos. I've used high end point and shoots, and they don't compare.

  4. Odd comparison, G9 vs. A720.  I think the G9 isn't worth what it costs.  Have you looked at Canon's S5?  In terms of capabilities, it falls nicely between typical point-and-shoots and SLRs.  If the S5 is too chunky for you, the SX100 could be a contender, though I didn't care for the fact that it lacks a viewfinder.
