  1. The previous person having problems with the S5 just doesn't know how to use it or is not a good photographer.  The S5 is an excellent camera for its price, acting as a bridge between point-and-shoot cameras and SLRs.  The 12X zoom capability is indispensable.  The S5 also does very well at macro photography.  I recently tried the video mode, and it worked quite well, allowing zooming while recording.  If you have any experience using Canons, you will feel right at home with the S5, as the menus look the same as they do on my 4-year-old A70.  My only beef with the S5 is its low-light performance, but most P&S cameras have a hard time in low light because they have such small sensors.  One way to get around motion blur in low light is to bump up the ISO setting, but on the S5, you get a lot of noise above ISO400.

  2. I personally own the Canon Powershot S5 IS, and I must say, it is for a semi-professional. The settings are pretty complicated, and having used it for half a year, I still can't take great shots. Furthermore, the image stabiliser function does not work, so my shots are always blurry for nights shots, or if I use flash for the night shots, the surroundings in my picture becomes really dark. I do not recommend powershot. It's pretty heavy too.

Specifically, you have to tell us what functions you're more interested in, what kind of pictures you're looking to take the most? then I will be able to tell you the pros and cons of the camera :)
