  1. It's digital.

  2. It is digital. If you can't put film in it then it is a digital camera.

The Canon XSi is a Digital SLR. The image sensor is not the same size as 35mm film. Because of this you have to multiply the focal length of your lens by 1.6 to get the equivalent length on a 35mm camera. For example a 100mm lens behaves like a 160mm lens would on a 35mm camera.

There are full frame DSLR's. On these the image sensor is the same size as 35mm film. These are very expensive professional models like the Canon 1DS MKIII ($8,000 body only) and the Nikon D3 ($5,000 body only).
