I have a Canon ZR 500 Mini DV, and I need a cable that will go from that camera to the laptop. I also need software, I guess, to take that footage and edit it. I have windows movie maker. Anyway, I've been looking on google, but there are so many Mini DV cables. I've bought two already, and they don't work. Someone help!

  1. Try FireWire.

  2. If you have a mini dv (cassette) camcorder….

Your dv camcorder needs a firewire connection (ieee 1394) in order to download video, your PC probably did not come with a firewire port, so you will have to buy one and install it, since most computers (except possibly brand new) don't come with a firewire port, your camcorder did not come with a firewire cord (ieee 1394) so you have to purchase a cord too. Your camcorder did come with a USB cord and that is used for downloading stills from your camcorder.

So, if your computer doesn't have a firewire port then you can't use a firewire cord, go to somewhere like bestbuy and buy your firewire card and cord at the same time.

  3. ZR 500, a miniDV vcam, must be FIREWIRE**-connected to pc to upload video thru video capture or video editing (VES)* software while vcam is on playback. Vcam.4pin->CABLE-> Pc (4/ 6pin?). Before cable** purchase, note: DV or Firewire port of vcam is 4pin...check the firewire port of PC whether 4 or 6 pin. If none, procure firewire card: pci for pc or pcmia for laptop (Google).
